xHamster is the most social of the big free tubes. It leans on amateur and homemade uploads, and it gives you creator profiles, comments and messaging on top of the videos. If you want to follow people and not just browse a catalogue, it does that better than PornHub or XNXX. If you want a quiet, tidy viewing session, it isn’t that.

What it does well

The draw is the amateur side. A lot of the library is made up of user uploads: couples, solo performers and people filming themselves. Professional studio clips are there too, but they get reposted across every tube, so they don’t set xHamster apart. The site runs a verification system that encourages ordinary users to upload, and that has produced regular uploaders with followings of their own.

Profiles make that following practical. Uploaders keep galleries, post blog entries and answer comments and direct messages. You can subscribe to a creator, get notified when they post, and build a feed around the people you like. There is also a dating section; treat it as an extra rather than a reason to visit.

The catches
